What has Scott been up to lately?  I haven’t blogged much.  And i certainly haven’t posted very much about any hobby related work.  Mainly that’s because i’ve been so consumed by work that i just haven’t had time.  Things are pretty crazy around here.  But this seems like a good of time as any to write up a blog post on things.  I wouldn’t call this a new year resolution.  I think you should be able to make a resolution anytime of the year.  And in fact, this is something that i’ve been brewing on and doing a little bit of work here and there for a few weeks now.  I’ll just keep it up.  I’ve decided that all work and no play makes Scott a dull boy.  So regardless of how hectic and busy work gets, i’m going to make time for my hobbies.  No more sitting in the corner gathering dust for months at a time.

That being said, what do i have going on?  Some are long-term projects, others are random spur of the moment things i’m doing in between letting the paint dry on the larger projects, and some are just because i wanted to try some new things.

The Chess Set

I’m working on a series of chess men.  These pieces are from France.  They don’t make them anymore (and they certainly don’t sell them in the local hobby shops).  I had to special order them from across the pond from the manufacturer.  They’re fun, and once they’re all done they’re going to look great together.  But it’s a LOT of work and i have to break it up by doing pieces in between or else i’ll go crazy and get sloppy.  To see the ongoing hobby page, click here and here.

The Tree

Another project i’ve been working on for a while is a large tree.  I’ve created several in the past, but never any that i’ve been happy with.  And i absolutely hate those plasticy looking fake trees they sell at the hobby shops.  Enter an excellent Terrain Thralls tutorial.  I have all the materials.  I’ve just been stalled out for a while.  It’s HARD putting all those leaves on there.  Each sub-branch takes about an hour.  And it’s messy :)  But in the end, i think i’ll finally have a tree i can be proud of.

Monster Dice

These are just for fun.  They are quick and easy and nice conversation pieces.  Usually they’re good to work on in between larger things when i’m waiting for something to dry.  Once they’re all painted, i want to put them into some type of diorama.  Any ideas for a base?

Pumpkin Horrors

These caught my eye (there are 3 pieces) while randomly checking the racks at my local hobby store.  I just had to have them.  I was going to paint them up like snowmen, but decided to go with the pumpkins that they are.  Perhaps i’ll stick them in a graveyard and have a nice terrain piece for a halloween decoration next year.  Almost like a nativity.  Except with evil pumpkins…

Emissarius

Wow, now this is one crazy miniature.  I’ve always wanted to try my hand at a massive piece.  But i can never find any.  This guy is about 8 inches tall.  Most miniatures are about 1.5 inches tall.  Also, i almost never paint plastic pieces. But how could i pass this guy up?  While i was at the store, the guy was trying to tell me how i needed to get a starter kit and build up an army and get really good at the game before this piece would be any good.  My wife finally just told him that i don’t care about the game.  I just paint miniatures for fun.  He thought that was very … odd, but was happy to sell me the piece (it wasn’t cheap).  The box says “difficult assembly”.  They weren’t kidding.  This is like putting together a full-fledged model car or something.   I can’t wait to paint it though.

This is what i’ve been working on the last two or three days whenever i can sneak some time away from everyone :)   It’s been nice to get some hobby work done.  I’ll try to talk Luann into getting some decent photos of this beastie later, but just wanted to post something really quick for anyone who might be interested.

With a little superglue, some green stuff, and a pair of pliers, this knight is back in business. Once everything dries i’ll give him a fresh coat of paint and he’ll be good as new. :)

One of these things is not like the other. It’s also not like i left it this morning after i finally finished painting it after weeks of work… I have no words…

Some little person decided to take a look, and then take the knight for a walk, and then leave it on the driveway and then let it get run over by a bicycle. I guess i can try to salvage something. He’s got battle wounds, right?

Randomly came across this artist tonight while looking for Escher-esque prints.

I just finished painting up the 2nd queen in the chess set.  It’s Rackham’s “The Gorgon”.

Here’s my latest painted miniature: Vandorendra.  She’s a
Reaper daemon, and was quite fun to paint.  Rather than use
NMM on the swords, I tried some dirty metal techniques.
Unfortunately, the light from the photographs washes them out and you
can’t see any detail.

I’m going to try some new photo techniques today when I get home from work.  In the meantime, click here for Vandorendra.

I’ve finished up another miniature.  This one is a female wizard
that was sculpted from a Larry Elmore painting for “Castle of
Deception”.  You can check out the pictures in the gallery.

I’ve posted pictures of my latest miniature: Baron Dragan. I’m using him as one of my knights on the side of light in the DragonChess game.
